A Famous Actor Will Deliver A Lecture In Oneonta Next Month

The author of “They Called Us Enemy” will deliver the Mills Lecture at SUNY Oneonta on Oct. 24th at 7 p.m. in the Alumni Field House.

George Takei is the author of the New York Times best-selling graphic memoir that describes his personal experiences of growing up in internment camps in the United States during World War II.

In his book Takei tells the story of Japanese-Americans held in the camps. He also writes about the joys and horrors of legalized racism, his mother’s hard choices, his father’s faith in democracy, and how those experiences planted the seeds for his future.

SUNY Oneonta received a Vision grant from Humanities New York to buy copies of the book to give to area high school students. The high schoolers are expected to read the book before the lecture. Participating high schools include Morris, Cooperstown, Sidney, Milford, and Worcester.

Members of the general public are also encouraged to read “They Called Us Enemy” and attend the lecture. Takei is also known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek.

The lecture and book distribution is part of a program called Common Read which is intended to advance diversity. It does so by encouraging students to examine topics such as equity, inclusion, and personal history. It further aims to infuse cultural literacy into academic programs by asking the campus community to read a diversity-related book.
