Have you ever heard of the Japanese Knotweed plant?  Me neither, so you are not alone.  But the Friends of the Upper Delaware River have and they are on the alert to make sure we know about it too.

The Japanese Knotweed is a damaging and pervasive and invasive plant that is currently spreading throughout the watershed.

Friends of the Upper Delaware River in partnership with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, National Park Service, New York League of Conservation Voters, Stroud Research Center, and Shippensburg University received a federal Delaware Watershed Conservation Fund grant in 2019 to educate the public and better understand the impacts of the spread of Japanese Knotweed in the Upper Delaware River watershed.

The Japanese Knotweed crowds out native plant species that are more effective at stabilizing soils and fostering healthy habitat conditions.

“This exciting project includes both scientific and public education components to address one of the most pressing ecological threats to the Upper Delaware River watershed. It will take a concerted and collaborative effort by all watershed stakeholders to gain ground on this rapidly proliferating threat to our river system”, said Jeff Skelding, Executive Director, Friends of the Upper Delaware River.

We applaud our friends who watch over and protect our beautiful waterways.
