Hurricane Remnants Headed for Otsego County, New York
We're about to go from one extreme to the other. Like we reported yesterday, our area is currently under a heat warning with indices reaching around 102 degrees. Like your favorite product you've seen on TV, wait, there's more. The remnants of hurricane Beryl are headed our way.
Tomorrow, the remnants of Hurricane Beryl will impact New York, bringing significant weather disturbances to the region. Originally forming in the Atlantic as a tropical storm, Beryl intensified into a hurricane before eventually weakening and transforming into a post-tropical cyclone as it moved towards the northeastern United States. Despite losing its tropical status, Beryl's remnants will carry considerable moisture and energy, and will result in weather events for New York.
As the remnants of Beryl sweep through New York, they will cause heavy rainfall across much of the state. The downpours may to flash flooding in several areas, particularly in areas where the drainage systems have the potential to be overwhelmed by the sudden influx of water. According to the National Weather Service, portions of Otsego County have the potential to see up to 2 inches of rain, and sustained winds of 12mph with gusts topping out at 21mph.
The aforementioned winds have the potential to cause slight to moderate damage. Gusts can lead to downed trees and power lines, resulting in power outages in various communities. Coastal areas will face rough surf and hazardous marine conditions, there is the potential for warnings and advisories for boaters and beachgoers.
The upside is that this system will bring some much needed relief from the heat and humidity that's been hovering in our area over the past few days. Keep in touch with forecasts and always stay weather aware!
