Last night, at around 7:40pm, the Oneonta Police Department was summoned to A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta to investigate a report of a gunshot wound by staff attending to the emergency room. Police responded right away to the facility in an effort to gather more information.

When OPD arrived to A.O. Fox Hospital, officers discovered that a 51 year old male victim was brought to the facility by a third party in a privately owned vehicle. The third party left the hospital in their vehicle before police arrived. The alleged shooting victim was questioned by OPD, and said that the alleged incident occurred on Chestnut Street in Oneonta, and gave some details as to where it happened.

With this information, an investigation into the Chestnut Street location was initiated, and the area was canvassed by members from the Oneonta Police Department, the New York State Police, Otsego County Sheriff’s Department and New York State University Police at Oneonta.

During this investigation, no evidence was discovered indicating that the incident had occurred at the Chestnut Street location. Additionally, no witnesses to the alleged shooting were located.

Bassett Healthcare Network security staff provided surveillance footage to investigating officers of the third party individual and vehicle that dropped off the victim to the hospital. A deputy with the Otsego County Sheriff's Office found the vehicle on I-88 and was able to conduct a traffic stop at that time. When pulled over, there were three occupants in the vehicle, yet only the driver was present when the victim was taken to the hospital. It was reported that the victim was located on River Street between Mitchell Street and Wilcox Avenue. The River Street area was searched by investigators, but no evidence was found.

The Oneonta Police Department says that this appears to be an isolated incident, and there is no threat to the public. Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the Oneonta Police Department at (607) 432-1111, or to provide information on the City of Oneonta Police Website which can be found here.
