In a world where companionship and connection are key to our well-being, believe it or not, robotic pets are stepping in to make a difference, especially for our seniors.

A study presented at the 2024 Annual Scientific Meeting of the Gerontological Society of America showed that robotic pets have a positive effect on women over 65. Led by Suk-Young Kang, PhD, an associate professor at Binghamton University, the research found that interacting with these robotic pets led to less depression, anxiety, and loneliness among the participants.

Kang and the team partnered with the Broome County Office for Aging to give 45 people either a robotic cat or dog during home visits. After a month, the participants felt better — they were less depressed, less anxious, and not as lonely.

Not only did these robotic pets serve as sources of comfort and companionship, but they also brought a sense of joy and significance to their owners. Kang mentioned many older adults may not be able to care for real pets due to various reasons, so these robotic alternatives offer a lifeline for those yearning for connection and happiness.

But let's not forget that while technology plays a big role in providing support, it can never replace the warmth and empathy of human interaction. The study highlighted that robotic pets, though responsive to touch and movement, are not substitutes for genuine human engagement. They are simply meant to complement and enhance the lives of our seniors, not replace the irreplaceable.

Experts such as Melissa Harris-Gersten, PhD, RN, and Wei Qi Koh, PhD, have also studied how robotic pets can help patients with dementia. Their research, like Kang's study, has found that these robotic companions can bring happiness and interaction to people, giving them chances to socialize and make connections with others.

However, it's important to recognize that not everyone may find robotic pets helpful because people have different needs and likes. While these robots can be very helpful for many, it's important to use them ethically, especially when working with vulnerable groups. It's important to balance the benefits of technology with the important human connections to make sure everyone is well.
