With the end of summer vacation and the return to school, it is a good time for parents to make sure their children’s vaccines are current and up to date. Yet according to the agency of healthcare research and quality statistics, fewer than 70 percent of all children receive all the recommended vaccines.

Some people wonder why we’re still getting shots for certain diseases that we don’t hear much about anymore, according to AHRQ Dr. Carolyn Clancy.

Diseases like polio are thankfully rare, mainly because of effective vaccines, which prevent about 14 million infections and save 30,000 lives every year. Your doctor will tell you which vaccines your children but make sure to ask questions if you don’t understand why or when shots should be given.
