New York GOP chairman Ed Cox is calling for the resignation of Democratic Assembly Majority Leader Sheldon Silver in the wake of Silver’s actions – or, as Cox sees it, lack of action — during a sexual harassment scandal surrounding longtime assemblyman Vito Lopez.

Lopez was investigated by the New York State Assembly Standing Committee on Ethics and Guidance after allegations of sexual harassment from young, female staffers.

Silver, who told the New York Times that he asked Lopez to resign last Friday, had approved a six-figure settlement with two of Lopez’s accusers without referring to the assembly ethics committee.

Cox is calling for a special investigation into the Lopez sexual harassment case.
