The New York State legislature is considering a bill that prevents level 1 sex offenders from becoming drivers for rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft. Ridesharing services were approved to operate statewide as part of the recently enacted state budget but the provision only checks the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Public database which only tracks level two and three sex offenders. Lawmakers call not checking for level one offenders a “dangerous loophole”.
