Steve Earle stopped by the Austin City Limits stage to perform a selection of songs from his new album, Guy, in tribute to his songwriting mentor Guy Clark. Over the course of his hour-long performance, Earle reviewed some of Clark's greatest musical classics, sprinkling in personal anecdotes and his favorite memories of the late songwriting legend.

At the end of his set, Earle brought a handful of his friends and collaborators to the stage for a group rendition of -- appropriately enough -- "Old Friends," a Clark classic that appears on Earle's tribute album. Press play above to watch video of the performance, before the full concert debuts on Saturday (Oct. 19).

Joining Earle and his band, the Dukes, onstage was a stacked assembly of musical guests, including Rodney Crowell, Joe Ely, Jo Harvey Allen and Terry Allen. The singers shared microphones and traded verses throughout the anthemic song. At the end of the performance, Earle thanked the crowd and spoke directly to Clark himself, saying "Guy Charles Clark -- see you when I get there, maestro."

Crowell is also among the cast of musicians who appear on the recorded version of Earle's "Old Friends," in a star-studded lineup that includes Rosanne Cash, Vince Gill and Emmylou Harris. "Old Friends" is the 16th and final track on Guy. Surrounding the record's release, Earle told The Boot that performing the song with artists he loves -- and using it to close a project -- was a no-brainer. "It seemed like a natural way to close the record. Guy and I had done it together to end shows that we did together," he explained at the time.

Clark's album dedicated to Clark is the second he has released in honor of a mentor: In 2009, he dropped Townes, in celebration of another musical hero, Townes Van Zandt.

Clark's hour-long ACL set will air on Saturday (Oct. 19) on PBS, as part of the Season 45 broadcast of the show. The series features a stacked lineup of diverse performers, including a set from Kane Brown later in the season.
